Off Machine Coater Facility Expansion

Capitalizing on an expected increase in demand, a well known specialty paper manufacturer recently completed the installation of a new off machine coater which will provide for an increase in production capacity.

Mohlin & Company was selected to provide complete design for the $1.5 million modification to an existing building to allow the installation of the new machine. The 105' x 150' building, originally built in 1909 and was being used as a pipe fabrication shop, and consisted of exterior brick bearing walls and a timber framed roof with a clear height of only 12'. In order to fit the new machine, and provide an adequate maintenance capability, the building would require a ceiling height of 20' and a large column free floor area. To maintain the present aesthetics of the exterior exposed to the public view, the existing brick walls were to remain.

Mohlin & Company designed a complete new structural support system within the confines of the existing exterior walls, which provided the needed headroom and clear floor space. Several options were presented for the increase in the exterior wall heights, and a precast concrete wall panel system was selected. In addition to the building modifications, Mohlin & Company designed a new foundation system for the machine.

The successful renovation of the existing facility allowed the owner to add coater capacity within the confines of the original building space.
