Pump Station Upgrade
A regional petroleum distributor supplying oil from Portland, Maine to Montreal, Canada through two pipelines had in years past reduced the capacity of their 18" line by eliminating the pumps in their intermediate pumping stations. Now needing to increase product flow - new pumps, valves, and controls were installed in the intermediate pump houses. Four primary pumping stations were also upgraded. Mohlin and Company was contracted to assist this client in reaching their goal.
Mohlin and Company was retained to provide mechanical and structural design engineering to modify and reactivate four abandoned stations and upgrade four active pumping stations. The abandoned stations had been stripped of equipment and turned into warehouse space. Mohlin and Company field surveyed each pump station to assess the structural work required, the yard piping to identify tie-in locations, and the electrical/control buildings for modifications to accommodate the new MCC equipment. Detailed structural design drawings and specifications were prepared to upgrade the pumping station buildings and foundations for new 1500 and 2500 horsepower pumps. Mechanical and piping design was provided in the buildings for the pump installations, 18" and 16" pipe, fittings, and pressure control valves, and, in the yard, underground and above ground supply and return piping, drains, and cross ties. The existing control buildings were modified for the addition of new power supply and control equipment.
This upgraded pumping system will allow the owner to deliver oil at a higher flow rate than previously. The new motor controls and instrumentation give the owner better control of their product delivery and allow for control of all process parameters from a single operations center at the source.
